Burpees For Owen – On Saturday, November 16th, the greater CrossFit Jersey City
community will rally to find a bone marrow donor for Owen Hogan. We are encouraging people to join the National Bone Marrow Registry (details below). Additionally, we will be raising funds in an effort to help offset the significant medical costs not covered by the Hogan family’s insurance provider. For every dollar raised, a burpee will be completed at CrossFit Jersey City. Let’s come together to help Owen get the care he needs to beat Aplastic Anemia, so he can get back to being a normal kid again! Owen’s story is detailed below:
Owen Hogan is two and a half years old. He loves trains, music, books, playground swings, and his baby brother Ethan.
Owen also has severe aplastic anemia. He needs your help.
Aplastic anemia is a disorder in which the body stops producing blood cells. It can result in fatigue, easy bruising, poor clotting, and impair the body’s ability to fight infection. Owen’s aplastic anemia is life threatening.
Since his diagnosis in May 2013, Owen Hogan has been through months of immunosuppressive therapy in hopes that his body would start producing adequate blood cells. Unfortunately the therapy did not work. Now Owen’s best chance at surviving his severe aplastic anemia is a bone marrow transplant. If Owen is able to receive a transplant from a perfectly matched donor, his chances of survival are between 80% and 90%.
At this point, a perfect match for Owen has not been located. If Owen’s system becomes too weak to wait for a perfectly matched donor, his doctors will need to use an imperfectly matched donor, at which point Owen’s chance of survival plummets to 40%.
This is where you come in. You could be Owen’s perfect bone marrow match.
Joining the registry is a painless cheek swab you can complete in the comfort of your own home. Read more about the outpatient donation procedure HERE.
Think about it. Pray about it. Talk about it. Do it.
Be a hero for Owen. Join the National Bone Marrow Registry throughbethematch.org or deletebloodcancer.org . Find a local Bone Marrow Donor Drive HERE.
You could be the one to save Owen’s life.
New Classes – We know that there is demand for some new classes. We are happy to announce the addition of two later night classes, another 5:15am, and an additional class on Saturdays. CHANGES ARE EFFECTIVE FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15.

908 Next Level Classes – We are also contemplating adding a “Next Level” CrossFit 908 class that will be specifically geared towards helping those who are proficient in all movements and are looking to compete. The two class times we are potentially going to offer are Tuesdays @ 7am and Saturdays @ 10:00am. These classes will have prerequisites as well as have additional costs associated with them. We are gearing up for a CrossFit 908 team this year at regionals. It takes an enormous amount of work to make it past the CrossFit Open, and we want to offer an advanced CrossFit class that will incorporate more technical movements as well as the rigors of competition level strength and conditioning. Class times are not up for negotiation. We simply want to know if we will have enough demand to even consider hosting these classes. Please post to the comment section if you are interested
Yoga – We would like feedback on when would be a good time for another Weekday Yoga class. We were thinking Thursdays @ 10:30am. How many people could make that? Please post any thoughts to the comment section.
